Community hubs are welcoming spaces based in primary schools, designed to support families from diverse backgrounds to connect, learn and participate in their local communities.
What is a community hub?
The community hubs model was first introduced in 2011, when school leaders recognised that many children were starting school without having accessed early years services – not because families didn’t care, but because parents, particularly mothers, were socially isolated and unfamiliar with local systems.
Hubs respond to this challenge by opening the school gates earlier. They provide a safe, trusted environment where families can build relationships with one another, connect with their child’s school, and access services that support learning, wellbeing and participation.
Tailored to the needs of each local community, hubs are managed by schools and led by hub leaders who understand their communities. This local ownership allows hubs to adapt over time, ensuring they remain responsive, relevant and welcoming.
