English language skills play an important role in helping participants feel confident and connected in everyday life.
Developing English gives parents an opportunity to engage with their child’s school, communicate with services, volunteer, learn new skills and explore pathways to work.
English
Community hubs provide a safe, supportive environment where participants can learn and practise English together. Through conversational activities and informal classes, participants build confidence using English in real-life settings. Some hubs also offer pathways to more formal learning, including referrals to the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).
By practising English in a trusted, welcoming space, participants are supported to strengthen communication skills and participate more confidently in school and life.
Story of impact
At Playford College hub in South Australia, one participant had been living in Australia for over a decade but lacked confidence in her English and felt discouraged about communicating.
Through English classes at the hub, and with encouragement from the hub leader and teacher, she gradually built confidence using English in everyday settings. Over time, she began supporting other participants, assisting with the crèche and contributing actively to hub activities.
